Welcome to the home of HMS Brackendale and the exhilarating story of one small destroyer’s historic wartime adventures.

THE WAVES OF WAR

In the summer of 1940, a defeated Europe lies in the hands of Nazi Germany. Britain stands alone. Under the threat of imminent invasion, it is the Royal Navy and their battle in the English Channel that keep the enemy at bay. Into these dangerous waters comes the new destroyer H.M.S. Brackendale, and her rebellious young commander, Richard Thorburn. His orders are to take the fight to the enemy, to ‘Seek, Engage, and Destroy’. With little preparation, Thorburn finds himself thrown into the desperate, close-range skirmishes of the narrow seas. From the Straits of Dover to the northwest of France, from east to west, they face a ruthless foe.

For Thorburn, when given the challenge of a new and hazardous mission, devotion to duty calls. In spearheading a clandestine operation, the ship, the crew and her captain, always in danger, deep inside enemy waters, are pushed to the limits of endurance. Courage is the order of the day.

The Waves of War is the fictional story of just one of the many Royal Navy destroyers that took part in numerous hard fought battles while defending the British Isles during the Second World War. HMS Brackendale was a newly built ‘Hunt’ class destroyer and it is through her exploits that we come to understand the often overwhelming struggle to patrol and secure the turbulent waters of the English Channel.

Under the legendry title of “THE WAVES OF WAR” the series goes on to celebrate the heroic adventures of not only her maverick young captain, but also the courage and devotion of her entire Ship’s Company. From the desperate days of 1940, and the close fought battles in the narrow sea, the following months bring the constant challenge of dangerous missions. Whether they faced the rigours of the unpredictable North Sea or the savage fury of a ruthless foe, the saga of Lieutenant-Commander Richard Thorburn, and the ‘fighting spirit’ of HMS Brackendale, will long live in the memory.
